What makes my books truly special?

What makes The Little Magpie Series special is that the stories are inspired by real family life, the happy moments, the difficult days, and all the little moments in between. Through Jakey and his family, the books gently explore experiences children may face, from having a poorly parent and coping with change, to starting school, growing in confidence, and enjoying those special relationships with Nanny and Grandad.

The stories are written in simple, comforting rhyme, with colourful characters and plenty of warmth and humour, so children can enjoy the adventure while connecting with the feelings behind it. I wanted to create books that children love to read, but that can also help families start conversations about things that aren’t always easy to explain. They’re not just stories about little magpies  they’re stories about family, courage, love, and growing together.

Featured book: When Daddy Couldn’t Fly

This book will always be incredibly special to me because it’s personal to my own family and it’s where the whole idea for The Little Magpie Series began. It was inspired by a difficult time in our lives when Daddy became very poorly and suddenly couldn’t do all the things he normally could. I wanted to find a gentle way of showing a child that even when life changes and someone you love is unwell, you’re still a family and you can face those difficult days together.

From that one story, Jakey and his little magpie family grew into an entire series. So, although every book means something to me, When Daddy Couldn’t Fly is where my little wings first began. Little Wings… Big Hearts.
